Gijs Luijten studied
Technical Medicine at the University of Twente, specialising in medical imaging and intervention and early
AR applications for OMF and free flap breast reconstruction surgery. He is pursuing his PhD at the University of Duisburg-Essen’s Faculty of Computer Science. At IKIM at University Hospital Essen, where he co-manages the
smartXR-Lab and contributes to the
ZvRM, he develops XR, ultrasound, and AI tools for surgical diagnosis and intervention, as well as support for researchers. He was a visiting scientist with TU Graz and the Medical University of Graz, and has co-organized
ShapeMI, MedShapeNet tutorials, and an ISBI inpainting challenge while supervising bachelor’s and master’s students. Through OncoVerse, he focuses on improving care for pancreatic cancer patients using clinically usable XR and AI technologies, while also supporting the scientific community through open-source resources and collaborative research. His
publications highlight these efforts.
